Project Title: Structural-Biological Study on Metal Reduction by a Thermophilic Gram-Positive Bacterium for Electricity Generation
Abstract of Project :
My research focuses on the potential application of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC) for the generation of electricity. Certain Micro-organisms oxidize organic compounds and transfer the available electrons to the anode thus generating electricity. The mechanism of such extracellular electron transfer, to either insoluble metal oxides or electrodes, particularly by gram-positive bacteria, is not yet clearly understood. Our laboratory has isolated a novel gram-positive thermophilic bacterium from an Indian hot spring that can reduce some metal oxides anaerobically at 600C and is likely to be useful in MFC. The objective of my Fulbright research project is to purify and determine the structure of relevant proteins to elucidate the mechanism(s) of electron transfer by this organism.
